January 2007
Note from the Newsletter Editor: Please note the change in time for this meeting.
Date: January 19, 2007
Time: 7:00 PM (Auction plants will be accepted after 4:30 PM and until 7:00 PM)
Place: The San Mateo Garden Center, 605 Parkside Way, San Mateo
Take the Alameda de las Pulgas exit off Highway 92. Turn south.
The Garden Center is located between 26th and 28th Avenues.
Program: The program this month will consist of our annual Gold Coast Cymbidium Growers (GCCG)
Auction of cymbidiums for collectors. This is an extremely important fund-raising event for
GCCG, since a large part of our yearly income depends on its success. We are extremely
fortunate to have Jeff 'keep your hand up' Trimble as our auctioneer.
There are three ways for you to contribute to the success of this event - as a donor, seller
and/or as a buyer.
Donor: The Gold Coast Cymbidium Growers club would appreciate any plant donations that
you would like to make to ensure the continued success of our organization. Just bring your
donation plant(s) to the January 19 meeting. After being tested for Tobacco Mosaic Virus
(TMV), these plants will be auctioned during the meeting.
Seller: You may bring in up to 10 plants or related orchid items for sale, with 25% of the
sale price benefiting GCCG and 75% going to the seller. For those selling, it would also be
appreciated if you would donate at least one additional plant to the society.
Buyer: An auction buyer wins in two ways. First, you add one or more quality plants to your
collection. Second, you have the satisfaction in knowing that the portion of your winning bid
that goes to Gold Coast will help support your club.
As this newsletter is going to print, we have already received generous donations and
promises of donations of quality plants from members and commercial growers. Plants
purchased for the auction and plant donations received to date are listed below.
Thanks to those of you who provided lists for your auction donations. All donated plants will
be tested for the Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) free of charge – so those bidding on the
plants will not need to worry about introducing any problems into their private collections.
There is still time to bring in a plant (or two) for the January auction. If every member
brought in just one plant, we would have an awesome time at our auction.
Plant Table: The club will not have a plant opportunity table this month due to the auction.
Board Meeting: The board meeting will be held at 5:00 pm at the San Mateo Garden Center due to the
preparations required for the auction. Contact Jeff Trimble at 650-368-8260 if you cannot
attend the meeting.
Dinner with the Speaker: Since this is our annual auction, there will be no dinner with the speaker.
Plant Sales: There will be no sales table this month due to the auction. If you wish to sell plants through
the auction format, remember that 25% of the proceeds go to the club.
